Abraham's faith walk to Canaan

According to Genesis 12, God told him to leave his home in Ur — a thriving city in what is now southern Iraq — and start walking. So he did. He took his wife Sarah, his nephew Lot, their servants, and their herds, and headed out. The first stop was Haran, about 600 miles (960 km) northwest, in what is now southeastern Turkey near the Syrian border. Abraham's father Terah had brought the family there earlier, and they had settled in for a while. But God wasn't done. He told Abraham to keep going — south this time — into the land of Canaan, a place he had never been. That leg of the journey added roughly another 400 miles (640 km), through the Fertile Crescent, past Damascus, and down into the hill country around Shechem, Bethel, and eventually Hebron. All told, Abraham traveled about 1,000 miles (1,600 km) — on foot and by donkey. No GPS. No paved roads. Just faith that the voice he heard was real and the promise was worth the walk. Hebrews 11:8 puts it this way: "Abraham showed his faith when God told him to move to a land God would give him. Abraham left without even knowing where he was headed."
